Quick story.
Imagine you’re trying to decide which used car to buy.
One owner talks about the engine, suspension, and tire pressure.
The other says:
“This car gets 38 mpg. Maintenance costs are 20% lower than the last model. Resale value is strong. It saves me about $1,200 a year.”
They’re both right.
But only one of them is speaking the language that helps you choose.
The same thing happens in product management every day.
PMs talk about usability, backlogs, velocity, MVPs, and journeys.
Leadership talks about revenue, growth, margin, and risk.
Same work. Two very different languages.
And when those languages don’t match, you lose influence.
So, my friend, Mike Smart, former product executive for NASDAQ companies, and I decided to do an entire episode on my show, SSPM Live!, to help you avoid that.
We break down how product managers can connect their work to business outcomes executives actually care about — without becoming a finance nerd or owning a forecast.
At a high-level value, here’s how you earn credibility with executive stakeholders:
Spot the business outcomes that actually matter.
Tie product work directly to revenue and ROI.
Translate product metrics into business impact.
Frame roadmap decisions in terms of economic tradeoffs.
Use simple math to estimate upside, risk, and cost of delay.
Move from “what we shipped” to “why it matters.”
One punch-to-the-gut moment in the episode:
If you’re a product leader who constantly translates for your team,
you’re not protecting them.
You’re limiting them.
If product management keeps speaking only in product terms:
You get pulled deeper into execution
Your roadmap gets questioned (or ignored)
Your seat at the table gets smaller every quarter
No drama.
Just slow erosion.
This episode is about stopping that slide. And building trust by tying your work to the things that actually matter.
After you watch, reply and tell me this:
What’s one product metric you track today but struggle to explain in business terms?
